Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute, West Los Angeles      The Institute's 6,500 s.f. multi-functional program required a 10,000 volume research library, a lecture hall with capacity varying from 50 - 200 seats, seminar classrooms for training analysts, a small referral clinic, and administrative offices. A walled complex allows the privacy and quiet of outdoor gardens while screening the noise and traffic from a major road. The site, fronting on two streets, is organized around its linear circulation which bisects the building and connects the two entrances. The central gallery with its brick floor and overhead skylight extending the length of the building provides a clear separation between administrative and learning functions. The combination reading room/lecture hall provides the flexibility and yet the scale appropriate for a handful of people or a capacity audience.
